Saskatoon Nature Society

The objective of the SNS is to promote the appreciation of nature and encourage a deeper knowledge of it through observation and sharing of experience.

Events this month:

WHOOPING CRANE FIELD TRIP October 7th. We will drive in search of any reported Whoopers within 100 km of the city. Bring a lunch, drinking water and warm clothing. Time: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Place: meet at the NW corner of the parking lot for the Centre at Circle and 8th Mall. Bus: Route 50 Lakeview departs U of S campus at 7:25 a.m. and arrives on 8th St adjacent to mall about 7:35 a.m. Route 8/84 departs downtown terminal at 7:16 a.m. and arrives on 8th at mall about 7:30 a.m. Walk to NW corner of parking lot. WOODLAND CEMETERY BIRD WALK October 9th.

Work up an appetite for Thanksgiving dinner by strolling through Woodlawn Cemetery and visiting the weir. We'll look for late fall migrants and early-returning winter residents. Time: 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Place: meet at the Cemetery's gate, just off 33rd St, on Memorial Ave, west of Warman Road. Bus: Route 14 North Industrial departs downtown terminal at 9:01 a.m. and arrives at 33rd St and 1st Ave about 9:10 a.m. Walk east 2 short blocks to Memorial Avenue.

PIKE LAKE BIRDING AND VANSCOY FALL SUPPER October 15th.

We will look for winter visitors to the park. Wear warm clothing. The chickadees will gratefully accept donations of sunflower seeds. After Pike Lake, some may wish to travel to Vanscoy Hall for their Fall Supper. Time: 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Place: meet by the grain elevator at the Western Development Museum parking lot on Lorne Ave. Bus: Route 1 Exhibition departs downtown terminal at 12:31 p.m. and arrives on Lorne Avenue next to museum about 12:50 p.m.

 

BLACKSTRAP LAKE BIRDING October 29th.

We will drive to this lake ½ hour SE of the city to look for any rare migratory waterfowl. We have a chance of possibly finding arctic-nesting waterfowl such as Surf Scoter, Long-tailed Duck or Pacific Loon. Bring a lunch. You may optionally stay for the Dundurn fall supper after this trip. Time: 1:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Place: meet at the NW corner of the parking lot for the Centre mall at Circle and 8th. Bus: Route 55 Lakeridge departs U of S terminal at 12:56 p.m. and arrives at bus stop on 8th St adjacent to mall at about 1:06 p.m. Walk to NW corner of parking lot. Route 81 departs downtown at 12:46 p.m. and arrives adjacent to mall at 1:05 p.m. Leader: John Patterson (306-249-0468)
